The Lovers And Cuddlers
Now, if you are looking for a cuddly feathered equivalent to a snuggly kitten, or the adoration of a cuddly puppy, then a Cockatoo might be right for you. The Cockatoo is among the most desirable of all pet birds. They are intelligent, fascinating, beautiful--not to mention sensitive, loving and devoted. But with all this comes one requirement: the Cockatoo requires touching, cuddling and affection on a daily basis. Cockatoos generally make one of the finest family pets, especially for young children.

To understand the Cockatoo personality one must look to their behavior in the wild. While primarily thought to be native to Australia, they in fact range from New Guinea, the Palau Islands and Indonesia to the Philippines. Survival in a variety of habitats, from jungles to arid plains, requires their intelligence and keen observation skills. And living in pairs, groups or flocks, the Cockatoos exhibit an emotional bond uncommon among less social or intelligent animals. This intelligence and emotion, as well as their beauty, is what makes them so popular as domestic pets.

Comedians, tricksters, entertainers, lovers--many cockatoos cannot seem to get enough bodily contact from their humans. They will sit in your lap for hours being playful or preened, only to ask for more. But if ignored and left alone, they can chew their way through a grand piano. So as you can see, you have a pet bird with many virtues, but also the potential for behavioral problems. Still, ranging from the pink/peach Moluccan to the incredibly easy-going Umbrella Cockatoo, and the exquisite, small Rose Breasted to the Goffins, all of the cockatoos make excellent family pets and personal companions.

My second bird-child, Genie a Moluccan cockatoo, is the love of my life. On a rainy dismal day, she will tenderly snuggle under my chin, lift up her delicate face, and stare at me with the most beautiful dark eyes, only to melt my heart with a gentle kiss to my nose. Who could ask for more?

Since I love hand raising all of the Cockatoos, I always have babies available for sale. If the baby Cockatoo you want is not in my nursery when you call, you may special order him/her from the next clutch ready to hatch.
