Brooke went to play with the neighbor girl, Kylene, right across the street (shown with halloween costumes). The parents were busy putting up Christmas lights when Kylene's brother yelled to us that Brooke was not feeling too good.
We thought flu. We seggusted to Brenda (10) that she go and bring Brooke home. She obliged. Half way back across the street it was obvius to my wife that something was happening beyond the flu. She snatched Brooke and took her inside as Donald (13) and myself were still on the roof with the lights.
My wife knew what was up right away, although the evidence was not overwhelming. She convinced me to call 911, in which case I decided that we should drive to Children's hospital. I finally relented and called 911 instead. They said an ambulance was on the way.
I would step outside and say "where is the damn ambulance?". Of course when they arrived, they were the beloved ambulance. My neighbor Don Knight said "Hi Don, how goes it?". I said - "just waiting for an ambulance". He thought I was joking. about 10 minutes later there were 20 concerned neighbors wondering what was up. |
